  • The Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation (CGIF) is pleased to announce that the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of California, Irvine, has been selected as the recipient of a new ball milling system.

The CGIF partnered with MSE Supplies, who donated the equipment. Proposals were accepted from various schools from across the U.S. that have a materials science and engineering program where ceramics, glass, nanomaterials, and other powder processing is part of the education program.

The University of California (UC), Irvine, will receive a MSE PRO Mini High Energy Vertical Planetary Ball Mill with four 50 ml or 100 ml alumina jars and milling media sets and features:

    1. Compact design, dimensions 500mm x 300mm x 340mm
    2. Low noise design (15-20 dB) by utilizing a special gear mechanism
    3. Programmable milling segments, with reversible rotation options
    4. Designed with a safety compliant view port

"UC Irvine is delighted to be the recipient of this state-of-the-art planetary ball mill from the Ceramics and Glass Foundation's industry-university grant program," exclaimed Dr. Martha L. Mecartney, who submitted the proposal on behalf of UC, Irvine. "This donation will strengthen our undergraduate synthesis and characterization lab course in Materials Science and Engineering and will let me develop even more relevant lab components on ceramic processing for my undergrad ceramics course.  We are so grateful to MSE Supplies for sponsoring this opportunity. Funding to upgrade undergraduate labs is very difficult to get, but there is no substitution for hands-on experience."

"Congratulations to the UC-Irvine MSE program for winning this lab ball milling system. MSE Supplies is committed to serving the materials science and engineering (MSE) community" said Dr. Hui Du, President of MSE Supplies LLC.

MSE Supplies Vice President Dr. Sumin Zhu added, "As a company specialized in the field of materials science and ceramic engineering, we are excited about the opportunity to partner with CGIF to donate this equipment to a university where ceramic engineering education and research is a focus area."

The certificate of award for this equipment donation will be officially presented to the recipient during the MS&T2017 Conference, October 8 - 12, 2017, in Pittsburgh, PA at Booth# 225 (MSE Supplies LLC).
