Creating Vortex: Types of Laboratory Stirrers

Posted by Marketing Team on

In any laboratory, the degree of mixing influences the result that is obtained from the experimental procedures. One has to be careful with the type of stirrer they choose since it may greatly impact the performance of the mixing jobs in question. Whether small magnetic stirrers for low-capacity experiments or broad overhead stirrers for heavy tasks, knowledge about stirrers and many types and how to use them is the key to better organization and functionality of the laboratories. This guide will assist you in discovering the various types of stirrers and allow you to make the most appropriate decision.

Magnetic Stirrers

Magnetic stirrers are crucial lab equipment for rotating platforms that are used for mixing limited volumes of liquids of low to medium viscosity. These devices include elements such as a magnetic bar, often known as a stir bar, that rotates inside the container with the liquid, thus achieving a vortex in the process that ensures proper mixing.

Types of Magnetic Stirrers:

  • Hotplate Stirrers: Combining stirring with heating, these are perfect for tasks requiring both mixing and precise temperature control. Available with either ceramic or aluminum tops:
    • Ceramic Hotplate Stirrers: These are characterized by high chemical resistance and are used for work with corrosive chemicals more often; the work under observation, such as titration, is performed with their help. They also are not ideal for metal containers due to the possibility of the substance cracking.
    • Aluminium Hotplate Stirrers: These stoves provide an efficient high heat transfer rate and high mechanical stability and they can be heated up to 450°C as well as usable with metal vessels.
  • Analog Stirrers: Suitable for low throughput without heating functionality, this type of stirrer is particularly suitable for testing purposes involving test tubes as well as beakers where adjustable stirring speeds are necessary for control.

Overhead Stirrers

For larger volumes and more viscous solutions, overhead stirrers are the equipment of choice. These stirrers consist of a motorized unit coupled with a stirring shaft or impeller that is inserted into the container, making them suitable for more demanding mixing tasks.

Types of Overhead Stirrers:

  • Paddle Stirrers: These are suitable for applications that call for minimum agitation but at low to medium speeds creating tangential flow hence providing small but constant movement.
  • Centrifugal Stirrers: These are applicable on round vessels with narrow neck openings working at medium to high speed making an axial flow highly efficient for proper mixing in confined vessels.
  • Turbine Stirrers: Operates at a medium to high speed and are meant to draw material from above and with low shear force making it safe to use even if contact is made with the vessel.
  • Dissolver Stirrers: These stirrers are designed for high speed which does a lot of cavitation and shear stress, creating a radial flow that is very useful for dispersion of solids and emulsification of particles in liquids.
  • Propeller Stirrers: These stirrers have efficient flow patterns; they work at middle to high speeds pulling materials from top to bottom, low shearing axial flow.
  • Anchor Stirrers: Specifically built for medium to highly viscous fluids; it delivers powerful agitation which creates a tangential flow that facilitates the adequate blending of thick substances.

Innovations and Advancements in Stirrers

There has been a notable shift in the functionality and design of stirrers to contribute to overall improvements in performance, accuracy, and ease of use. Magnetic stirring technology enhanced with simultaneous heating and stirring functions relying on complex magnetic coils without noise and variations in performance. They sustain precise temperature control and uniformly identical stirring, despite fluctuations that occur due to changes in load and volume.

Multi-position magnetic stirrers have also seen a lot of improved changes with capabilities of stirring at multiple positions at the same time. These stirrers have simple and easy-to-use interfaces nowadays which include display systems and fully automated operations for recognition of beaker types and reversing mechanisms that make the mixing process more effective and efficient.

Recent advancements in the design and construction of stirrers have proposed enhanced variety with better resistance related to harsh laboratory conditions. These stirrers can work in various environments including incubators due to their high protection ratings and can be easily cleaned for continued use.

Stirrers have also been developed to cater to various specialties that may be required in a laboratory. Some types are made for application in conditions that involve submersion in water or even in oil baths and they can also withstand extreme variations in temperature. Biological stirrers are designed to provide efficient, non-thermal mixing of samples that are sensitive to heat, and these have features that will make them dust and germ-resistant.

Another significant improvement is float magnetic stirrers. These stirrers have a very high stirring force that guarantees the wear-free mixing of products and solutions in large containers. One of the unique features of this design is the magnetic rod which hovers above the container without touching the container’s bottom thus eliminating wear. This application is fitting concerning the blending of such abrasive media due to the ability of this equipment to stir fast while at the same time not causing additional wear on the softer container material.

Here at MSE Supplies, we have various stirrers from MSE PRO, Hiedolph, IKA, and  Jeio Tech Lab Companion that are at the cutting edge of modern efficiencies. Depending on the level of complexity of their lab needs, the customers will find what they need from a simple stirring solution to complex equipment with modern options.
