Edmund Bühler Compact Shakers KS

Edmund Bühler Compact Shakers KS are ideal for small scale discovery biochemistry laboratories. These small shakers are compatible with TH 15 incubator hoods and facilitate the growth of microorganisms used to produce test batches of biological products. Other attachments may facilitate the extraction of those small molecules.

The KS series at a glance.

The Dual Action KL 2 is a bit smaller than the KS 15 series shakers. The KS 15 can handle loads of up to 15 kg, the KL 2 can handle loads of up to only 2 kg.

 

KL 2 is the only shaker that can switch between orbital and reciprocating shaking.

The KS 15 series has two shaker base options. The rack system fits on the tray that comes with the shaker. The Universal tray must be purchased separately.

KS Accessories

The Combifix KS rack system is a rack for mounting other accessories. The Universal tray KS allows the user to screw in other attachments for flasks and test tube holders. All of these accessories must be purchased separately.

Bars with sponge rubber coverings may be purchased to secure vessels in a variety of trays. The portion of the photographs in focus highlights the specific clamping strips.

 

Benefits of the Edmund Bühler separatory funnel shaker attachments

These include clamps for holding the necks and stoppers of separatory funnels (0050 207 and 0050 206) and the tops and bottoms of graduated cylinders and other high vessels. Separatory funnels are used for the following:

  • Pesticide residual extraction
  • Organic extraction from soil
  • Organic extraction from water
  • Extraction of harmful organics from the soil
  • Pesticide residuals from foods
  • THC and pesticide residuals from cannabis
  • Testing production of biodiesel

The center image is from a Canadian website for making homemade biodiesel from vegetable oil. One step involves removal of the glycerol backbone for triglycerides (flasks in the background). Another step is separating the glycerol in the aqueous phase (bottom) from acyl chains. In a laboratory setting such chemistry would be performed on a laboratory shaker under temperature, time, and velocity controlled conditions.

The TH 15 Incubator Hood

The Incubator Hood may be used to regulate the temperature for growing biological material or it may be used to regulate the temperature for doing organic/aqueous extractions with a separator funnel. This makes the Edmund Bühler system unique, considering the tendency for the viscosity of organics to change with temperature.

The TH 15 Incubator Hood fits over TiMix 5 and KS 15 Shakers with loads of Erlenmeyer flasks (size 1000 mL and under). The temperature may be set from +5°C above ambient to +50°C. An additional heater may be purchased to increase the temperature range up to 60°C. The unit comes with two side windows and a window on the door that lifts upward. A 378 x 318 mm tray is also available for samples that have to be temperature controlled but do not require shaking.
