Service Overview

 1. True Density (Gas Displacement Method)

  • Sample Requirements:

    • Powder: Ideally 10 mL of sample.
    • Bulk Material: Dimensions must be smaller than 15 mm in diameter and 35 mm in height, with a minimum total volume of 6 mL.
  • Definition:
True density refers to the actual mass of a solid material per unit volume in an absolutely compact state, excluding any internal pores or interparticle voids.

  • Testing Method:
The sample is placed in a true density analyzer using helium gas as the medium. The chamber is pressurized to a predetermined value, then the helium expands into an expansion chamber. The instrument automatically records the equilibrium pressures during the two stages. Using the law of conservation of mass and calibration with a standard sphere, the volumes of the measurement and expansion chambers are determined, allowing calculation of the sample’s volume. True density is then calculated as:
True Density = Mass / True Volume.

2. Bulk Density and Tapped Density

  • Sample Requirements:
    • Powder: At least 50 g (or 80 mL in volume).

Bulk Density:

Also known as volumetric density, it represents the density of a powder in its naturally settled state. It is defined as the mass per unit volume of a powder when freely poured into a standard container under specified conditions, including both interparticle voids and internal porosity.
Factors such as particle shape, size, surface roughness, and particle size distribution significantly influence bulk density, which varies based on production methods and processing conditions.

Tapped Density:

Tapped density is measured after vibrating the sample to reduce interparticle voids as much as possible. The process involves filling a container with a fixed quantity of powder, vibrating it under controlled conditions, and recording the volume when no further compression occurs. Tapped density is calculated as:
Tapped Density = Mass / Final Volume.

Tapped density is crucial for characterizing materials like catalysts, foaming agents, insulating materials, ceramics, and powders used in industries such as battery manufacturing.

3. Compacted Density

  • Sample Requirements:

    • Powder: At least 20 g.
  • Testing Method:
The powder is compressed under a specified pressure, and its weight and volume are measured to calculate the compacted density.

4. Liquid Density

  • Sample Requirements:

    • Liquid state with sufficient flowability, 10 mL.
  • Testing Method:
Common methods include the U-tube vibration method or oscillating tube method.

5. Foam Plastic Density (Immersion Method)

  • Sample Requirements:
Suitable for granular or seamless, dense plastic materials.

  • Testing Standard:
Follows ISO 1183 using the immersion method.

6. Density Measurement by Archimedes’ Principle

  • Sample Requirements:

    • Solid samples with smooth surfaces, no depressions or pores, and a minimum mass of 1 g.
  • Testing Method:
The sample’s weight is measured in air and then submerged in water to measure its weight in water. Using Archimedes' principle, the sample's volume is calculated, and its density is derived as: Density = Mass / Volume.

Instrument Models: AccuPyc 1340, Anton Paar DMA 4200M (Austria), ZS-102 Tapped Density Analyzer, etc.
