Overview

An Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) is a type of electron microscope that allows for imaging of samples in a gaseous environment rather than a high vacuum, which is typical in conventional SEMs. This feature enables the observation of moist, oily, or non-conductive samples without extensive preparation, such as coating with conductive material. ESEM is especially useful for studying biological specimens, hydrated materials, and samples that may change or deteriorate in vacuum conditions, providing insights into their morphology and surface characteristics in a more natural state.

Sample Requirement

I. Sample Preparation Instructions

Powder, liquid, film, and bulk samples can all be tested. For powder samples, approximately 10 mg is required, while bulk samples should have dimensions smaller than 1 cm in both length and width, with a thickness less than 1 cm.

  1. Powder Samples: Standard powders can be directly attached to conductive tape for testing. If dispersion is required before testing, please specify in advance.

  2. Liquid Samples: The testing technician will select either conductive tape, silicon wafer, or aluminum foil based on the sample requirements and laboratory conditions. If you have specific requirements, please indicate them beforehand.

  3. Film or Bulk Samples: Please mark the surface to be tested. If testing a cross-section is needed, please prepare it yourself or indicate in advance.

II. Sample Requirements

These requirements apply only to material samples; biological samples require separate specifications. Samples must be non-toxic, non-radioactive, thermally stable, and able to withstand electron beam exposure.

  1. Sample Conductivity

For non-conductive or poorly conductive samples, gold sputtering is recommended to enhance conductivity. The default gold sputtering duration is 50 seconds. If a longer sputtering time or carbon coating is required, please specify in advance.

  2. Sample Magnetism

Magnetic particles can easily adhere to the pole pieces, and, as a rule, magnetic samples are not suitable for electron microscopy (SEM and TEM).

Given varied tolerances among technicians regarding the level of magnetism in samples, please accurately indicate the presence and strength of magnetism in the sample. To help classify magnetism and its strength, the following simple definitions are provided: non-magnetic, weakly magnetic, and strongly magnetic.

Samples containing iron, cobalt, or nickel are considered magnetic. If the sample is attracted by a magnet, it is classified as strongly magnetic; if it is not attracted by a magnet, it is considered weakly magnetic.

Note: Magnetism can be classified as hard or soft. Some materials may not exhibit external magnetism but can become easily magnetized in a magnetic field, with their magnetism increasing upon heating

* Note: Data analysis service is not included in the list prices. Please contact us for a quote on data analysis and reporting services.
