Hall Effect Testing Analytical Service

Overview

Hall Effect Testing is a technique used to measure key electrical properties of materials, such as carrier type (electrons or holes), carrier concentration, and mobility. By applying a magnetic field perpendicular to the flow of electric current through a sample, the Hall effect generates a transverse voltage, known as the Hall voltage. This voltage provides insights into the behavior of charge carriers in the material. Hall Effect Testing is commonly used in material science and semiconductor industries to characterize semiconductors, metals, and thin films, helping to evaluate their electrical performance and suitability for various applications.

Test item: hall mobility, carrier type, carrier concentration, Hall coefficient, resistivity.

Sample Requirements

Sample Form:
The sample must be in the form of a thin film (either as a standalone film or a film on a substrate; the substrate must not be conductive), a thin sheet, or a compressed powder pellet (prepared to an appropriate size). These are typically semiconductor materials. If the sample is a thin film on a substrate, the film should be relatively thick, and its thickness must be accurately determined. This includes the pure film thickness as well as the thickness of the sheet or pellet. These values need to be input into the instrument during testing for calculation purposes.

Dimensions:

  • Circular or square pieces with dimensions of 8–11 mm (10 mm square is preferred).
  • Conductive layer thickness should ideally be between 10–500 nm, with an overall sample thickness not exceeding 2 mm.
  • Samples must be uniform, flat, and free of defects such as holes or wrinkles.
  • For powders, a sample volume of 3 mL is required.

Sample Resistance:

  • The sample resistance should not exceed 200 MΩ.
  • For samples with resistance over 100 Ω, metal electrodes need to be prepared. These electrodes should consist of four points positioned at the corners of a square. If needed, the laboratory can fabricate these electrodes.
