MSE PRO™ Calcium Stearate
The MSE PRO™ Calcium stearate is also known as calcium octadecanoate. White light crystalline powder. Decomposed by high heat. Insoluble in water, cold ethanol and ether, soluble in hot benzene, toluene and turpentine, slightly soluble in hot ethanol and ether. Decomposes with strong acids to stearic acid and corresponding calcium salts. Hygroscopic in air. Not resistant to degreasing microorganisms. Decomposes at high temperatures to form stearone and hydrocarbons. Non-toxic. Industrial products are often mixed with the corresponding oleate.
Used as stabilizer and lubricant of PVC; halogen absorber in polyethylene and polypropylene; lubricant of polyolefin fiber and molding products; lubricant and mold releasing agent of thermosetting plastics such as phenol aldehyde and amine; thickening agent of lubricating grease; waterproofing agent of waterproof fabrics; smoothing agent of paints and lubricant of pencil core. Food grade calcium stearate is used as anti-caking agent. It is made by reacting baked stearic acid with sodium hydroxide to make a dilute soap solution and then reacting with calcium chloride.
