MSE PRO™ Collagen
The MSE PRO™ Collagen is an inert protein found mainly in skin, ligaments, bones and teeth. Its distinguishing feature is its rigidity, which is used to transmit mechanical forces. The basic structural unit is procollagen. Procollagen molecules are about 2600 angstroms in length, 15 angstroms in diameter, and have a molecular weight of 300 kDa. In tendons, these macromolecules form collagen fibers along the axial direction.
Collagen fibers with limited cross-linking (i.e., not aged) are somewhat soluble in dilute acids or concentrated neutral salt solutions. Natural tendon (aged) collagen is insoluble in aqueous solutions.
This product is an insoluble lyophilized powder made from broken up aged beef tendon and is used as a substrate for collagenase activity assays.
