Background
Bile Salt Sulfotransferase (SULT2A1( is a cytosolic enzyme that belongs to the Sulfotransferase 1 family. SULT2A1 is primarily expressed in the liver and adrenal tissues, and to a lesser extent in the kidney. SULT2A1 utilizes 3'-phospho-5'-adenylyl sulfate (PAPS) as sulfonate donor, and it catalyze the sulfonation of steroids and bile acids in the liver and adrenal glands. SULT2A1 may have a role in the inherited adrenal androgen excess.
