Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) Analytical Service
SKU: SHG001
Overview
The generation of second harmonic (SHG) requires meeting two conditions:
1. The medium must possess non-centrosymmetry.
Under the electric dipole approximation, a medium with centrosymmetry will have a zero second-order susceptibility tensor, thus preventing the generation of second harmonic signals.
2. The phase-matching condition must be satisfied.
Phase matching directly determines the efficiency of a nonlinear optical process.
If the phase-matching condition is fully satisfied during the second harmonic generation process, the frequency-doubled light wave in propagation remains in phase with the continuously generated second harmonic polarization wave, leading to constructive interference. Consequently, the intensity of the generated second harmonic gradually increases from zero until the fundamental wave's power is completely converted into second harmonic power, achieving maximum output.
Testing procedure
The emission wavelength is 1064.8 nm (based on the specifications), with a pulse duration of 5 ns and a repetition rate of 10 Hz, using an Nd:YAG laser. The bump radiation is focused onto a spot with a 1.0 mm diameter. The SHG signal is selected by a monochromator and detected by a photomultiplier tube. A liquid nitrogen-flow cryostat with quartz windows and a Beckman temperature controller (model CTC-250) is used for low-temperature measurements. The temperature is determined by an iron-constantan thermocouple.
