Overview

A Laser Thermal Conductivity Analyzer is an advanced instrument used to measure the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of materials. It utilizes laser technology to deliver a precise, non-contact heat source and measures the thermal response of the sample. This method is suitable for a wide range of materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites, and is commonly used in industries such as electronics, aerospace, and materials science. The device provides rapid, accurate, and reliable data, often used for quality control, research, and development purposes.

Thermal Conductivity = Thermal Diffusivity × Specific Heat × Density

a. LFA 427/457:
Measures the thermal diffusivity in the thickness direction directly. For samples with dimensions of diameter 12.7 mm or square 10 × 10 mm (preferably with side lengths of 9.7–9.9 mm; samples larger than 10 mm cannot fit), the specific heat is obtained using the comparative method. The thermal conductivity is calculated using the provided density and thickness of the sample.

b. LFA 467:
Measures the thermal diffusivity in the horizontal direction directly. Specific heat is determined using the sapphire method (additional charge applies). Thermal conductivity is then calculated. The in-plane thermal diffusivity test is suitable for high-conductivity ultra-thin samples and is not suitable for low-conductivity samples.

c. Measurement Range:

  • Thermal Conductivity Range: 0.1–2000 W/mK
  • Testing Temperature Range:
    • LFA 427: Room temperature to 1300℃
    • LFA 457: Room temperature to 800℃
    • LFA 467: -80 to 400℃
  • Measurement Atmosphere: Inert gases (nitrogen, argon)

Sample Requirements

Sample Condition:

  • Bulk or thin film samples.
  • Samples must be opaque.

Requirements for Thermal Conductivity Testing in the Thickness Direction:

  • The sample surface must be flat, with uniform and consistent thickness. Thickness and density data must be provided.
  • For cylindrical samples: diameter of 12.7 mm or 6 mm, thickness between 1–4 mm. (Note: Specific heat cannot be determined by the comparative method for 6 mm diameter samples; only thermal diffusivity can be obtained.)
  • For cubic samples: length and width of 10 × 10 mm (preferably 9.7–9.9 mm; samples larger than 10 mm will not fit), thickness between 1–4 mm.
  • For materials with low thermal conductivity, thinner samples are preferred.

Requirements for Thermal Conductivity Testing in the In-Plane Direction:

  • The sample surface must be flat, with uniform and consistent thickness. Thickness, density, and specific heat data must be provided.
  • Sample diameter: 22–25.4 mm; thickness: 0.1–1 mm, with a minimum thickness of no less than 20 µm.
