In a magnetic field, molecules or atomic nuclei with nuclear magnetism absorb the energy difference between two energy levels as they transition from a lower to a higher energy state. This process produces a resonance spectrum, which can be used to determine the number, type, and relative positions of certain atoms within a molecule.
