Cathodoluminescence Spectroscopy (SEM-CL) Analytical Service

Cathodoluminescence Spectroscopy (CL) can adjust the energy of the incident electrons, the excitation source of CL is a high-energy electron beam, allowing the electrons to enter different depths of the sample, thereby observing the crystal defect information below the sample surface. The disadvantage is that the surface is easily damaged by electrons. The cathode fluorescence spectrum depends on the distribution of valence electron energy levels of the luminescent substance (including the main substance and impurities). Therefore, it can be used to determine the cathode fluorescence characteristics of some minerals and is a method for mineral identification.

CL uses an electron beam to excite semiconductor samples, excite valence band electrons to the conduction band, and then because the conduction band energy is high and unstable, the excited electrons jump back to the valence band and release a characteristic fluorescence spectrum with energy E≤Eg (energy gap).
