Overview

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is a technique in which, under programmed temperature control, a detector quantitatively measures the heat absorbed or released by a sample to study its thermal changes (such as melting, decomposition, cross-linking, etc.). The predecessor of DSC is Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA). DTA can only measure the temperature difference (△T) signal and cannot establish the relationship between enthalpy change (△H) and temperature difference (△T). In contrast, DSC can measure the △T signal and establish a connection between △H and △T.

During a programmed temperature process (heating, cooling, isothermal, or a combination thereof), the heat flow difference between the sample and the reference material is measured to characterize all physical and chemical changes related to thermal effects. This allows for testing of glass transition, compatibility, melting, crystallization, thermal stability, oxidation stability, enthalpy of fusion, crystallization enthalpy, material identification, specific heat, and more. It is widely used in fields such as plastics, rubber, coatings, food, pharmaceuticals, biological organisms, inorganic materials, metals, and composite materials.

Testing Procedure (for reference only)

  • Sample Preparation: Accurately weigh a specific amount of the sample and prepare it as uniformly as possible in small granular or thin flake form.
  • Sample Placement: Place an empty crucible in the reference pan position, and place the crucible containing the weighed sample in the sample pan position.
  • Setting Experimental Conditions: Set the programmed heating conditions according to the customer’s requirements, with a typical heating rate of 5°C/min.
  • Starting the Experiment: Start the DSC instrument to begin scanning and record the real-time heat flow curve.

Analytical Service Minimum order requirement: $250 per order. A $200 handling fee will be applied if order is below $250.

Please contact sales@msesupplies.com for additional information and instructions on our Analytical Services program. Confirmation of the sample(s) requirements, SDS sheets and additional information is needed prior to processing the Analytical Service order.
