Flash Point Testing Analytical Service
SKU: FP001
Overview
The flash point, also known as the flash fire point, is the lowest temperature at which a material or product forms a flammable mixture with air and ignites upon contact with a flame, burning momentarily. It reflects the evaporation tendency and thermal stability of the material or product, serving as a crucial safety indicator during storage, transportation, and use. Materials with higher flash points are less likely to ignite and cause fires, while those with lower flash points require greater safety precautions during handling and storage.
The flash point of a substance is closely related to its volatility; lighter fractions evaporate more easily, resulting in a lower flash point. Substances with lower flash points are more readily ignited by flames, increasing the risk of fire. Thus, the flash point is considered a key fire safety metric. Liquids are classified as flammable or combustible based on their flash points. Flash points are determined using specialized instruments, typically categorized into open-cup (O.C.) and closed-cup (C.C.) methods. The open-cup method involves heating the liquid in an open container, while the closed-cup method heats the liquid in a sealed container. Closed-cup flash points are generally 4–5°C lower than those measured by the open-cup method.
