Bovine serum albumin contains 17 disulfide bonds and an unpaired cysteine (Cys34), which promotes dimerization and also affects higher level of aggregation because the rate of aggregation is slowed down if Cys34 is covalently bound to another compound.

BSA has a very wide range of laboratory applications, and is often used as a sequestering agent in immunological assays, where it can be treated to remove nucleic acid ectonuclease, endonuclease, ribonuclease, and protease activity. and protease activity. Albumin may undergo some degradation during treatment.
