The Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) Analytical Service

The Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) Analytical Service

SKU: LOI001

Service Overview

The Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) is the minimum concentration of oxygen, expressed as a percentage of the total volume, required to sustain the combustion of a polymer in a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen. It is an important parameter for characterizing the flammability of materials. LOI is typically determined using a candle-like test, where a polymer rod is burned downward under specific conditions. It is generally accepted that a material with an LOI of 22 can burn in the presence of atmospheric air. In defined conditions, the LOI represents the lowest oxygen concentration in an oxygen-nitrogen mixture necessary to support flame combustion of the material. The result is expressed as the percentage of oxygen by volume.

Sample Requirements

Prepare at least 15 parallel samples. Sample dimensions can refer to the table below: Standard requirement: 80 mm × 10 mm × 4 mm. Alternatively, samples with a length exceeding 5 cm are sufficient for testing.

Application
150×58 mm For textile materials
80~150 10±0.5 4±0.25 For molded materials
80~150 10±0.5 10±0.25 For foam materials
80~150 10±0.5 ≤10.5 For sheet materials in the 'received condition'
70~150 6.5±0.5 3±0.25 For self-supporting molded materials or plates used in electrical applications
- 52±0.5 ≤10.5 For soft films or sheets
140~200 20 0.02~0.1 For films that can be wound on a specified rod in the 'received condition'

Notes:

a. Shapes I, II, III, and IV are suitable for self-supporting materials. Shape V is suitable for non-self-supporting materials.

b. Results from shapes III and V are valid only for comparison of samples with the same shape and thickness. Thickness variations for such materials are subject to other specific standards.

c. Shape VI is applicable to films that remain self-supporting after being wound. The dimensions in the table refer to the original shape of the film before winding.

d. For films with a thickness allowing winding on a specified rod, multiple layers may need to be stacked for winding to achieve results comparable to shape VI.

e. Liquid and powder samples are not accepted.
