Melt Flow Index Tester (MFI Tester) Analytical Service
SKU: MFI001
The Melt Flow Index (MFI), also known as Melt Flow Rate (MFR), Melt Flowability, or Melt Index, is a numerical representation of the flowability of plastic materials during processing. It was established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) based on a method commonly used by DuPont to characterize plastic properties.
The testing method involves heating plastic pellets to form a molten fluid under specific conditions of time (10 minutes), temperature, and pressure (standards vary for different materials). The amount of material (in grams) extruded through a 2.1 mm diameter tube during this time is measured. A higher MFI value indicates better processability and flowability of the plastic, while a lower value suggests poorer flowability.
Sample Requirements
For liquid samples, a minimum of 50 mL is required. For solid or powder samples, the particle size should be less than 3 mm, and approximately 20 g should be provided. Providing a slightly larger amount of the sample is preferred.
