The more common form of ferrous oxalate is dihydrate, whose crystal structure consists of a chain of oxalate-bridged iron atoms covered with water molecules, which when heated dehydrates and decomposes into carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, iron oxide, and scorched black iron.
