MSE PRO™ 304L Iron Based Stainless Steel Metal Powder for Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing)
304L grade stainless steel is the most common austenitic stainless steel for additive manufacturing.
The "L" in 304L denotes its lower carbon content, typically around 0.03% or less, which helps minimize carbide precipitation during welding and subsequent processes. Consequently, 304L stainless steel exhibits enhanced resistance to sensitization and inter-granular corrosion, making it highly suitable for applications that require excellent corrosion resistance.
In its powder form, 304L stainless steel retains its chemical and mechanical properties, enabling its use in additive manufacturing processes. The powder consists of fine-grained, spherical particles with sizes typically ranging from a few micrometers to several tens of micrometers.
During the 3D printing process, a high-energy laser selectively fuses the 304L powder particles layer by layer, following a digital design, thereby creating intricate and complex metal parts. The laser-generated heat melts the powder particles, and upon cooling, they solidify into a durable metal object. This additive manufacturing technique offers numerous advantages, including the ability to produce intricate geometries, customization options, and reduced material waste.
The resulting 304L stainless steel AM parts exhibit high strength, excellent ductility, and exceptional corrosion resistance, rendering them suitable for various applications, including aerospace, automotive, medical, and industrial components, etc.
