    Applications

Holmium (Ho) is a rare earth element that belongs to the lanthanide series. Pure holmium slowly forms a yellowish oxide coating when exposed to air and thus need to be stored properly. Its magnetic strength is higher than any other elements, thus is used to create the strongest artificially generated magnetic fields in a magnetic flux concentrator. It is also used as a burnable poison to regulate nuclear reactors since it can absorb nuclear fission-bred neutrons. Other applications include as additives in solid-state lasers crystals and as colorants in ceramics and glasses.
