Zirconium Compounds

The element Zirconium was discovered in Berlin, Germany, in 1789 by M.H. Klaproth. It was first isolated in 1824 by J.J. Berzelius in Stockholm, Sweden.

Zirconium is metallic materials that is hard, lustrous, silvery colored. It is extracted from its mineral ores (the oxide or zircon, ZrSiO4) by conversion to the tetrahalide followed by reduction with magnesium. The Zirconium metal is extremely corrosion resistant due to the formation of a stable zirconium oxide film on the surface and it is resistant to acids (with the exception of HF) and alkali.

As a result of its excellent corrosion resistance, zirconium is widely used in the chemical industry where corrosive conditions are present. Also, thanks to its superior high temperature properties, coupled with its low neutron absorption, it is used in the construction of nuclear reactors. The pure zirconium metal is also used as a lining in jet engines. Zirconium is used as an alloying element, the resultant alloys having improved mechanical properties. When used as a sputtering target material, Zirconium can be sputter coated on the target substrates to form a thin film of zirconium metal. Both standard and customized zirconium metal sputtering targets can be made and supplied by MSE Supplies LLC. Available Zirconium metal grades include Grade 702 and 99.95% grade low Hf content (<100 ppm).
